Mouza map download in West Bengal — the honest version

The thing nobody tells you first

There is no free, instant mouza map download on banglarbhumi.gov.in. If you arrived expecting to pick a district, block and mouza and receive a PDF in your browser, that is not how the service is built — and no amount of hunting through the menus will produce it.

What the portal actually offers is two different things that sound similar and are constantly confused:

• Mouza Map Availability Details — sits directly under Citizen Services. It tells you *whether a digitised map exists* for your mouza. It does not give you the map.
• Mouza Map Request — sits under Service Delivery. This is the actual request for a copy. It requires you to be signed in, and a fee applies.

Why the free-download expectation is so widespread

Mouza map searches are among the highest-volume land queries in West Bengal — tutorial videos on the subject draw very large audiences — and a great deal of the content answering them is wrong in the same way. It shows the Mouza Information service, which returns mouza-level details, and implies that a map sheet follows from it. It doesn't.

It is worth being clear about the distinction, because it saves a genuinely frustrating afternoon. Mouza *information* is something the portal shows you on screen at no charge. The mouza *map sheet* is a departmental output that has to be requested, paid for, and generated. Neither is a way around signing in — Banglarbhumi's menus open and its District and Block dropdowns populate while you are signed out, which makes the site feel more open than it is, but asking it for an actual record or case takes you to the sign-in page.

What you need before you start

The request form is unforgiving about identifiers. Gather these first, because a half-remembered mouza name will not get you through it:

• District, Block and Mouza — selected from the portal's own dropdowns, not typed freehand. Spellings on the portal are transliterations and often differ from local usage.
• JL number — the Jurisdiction List number for your mouza, a serial within its police station area. Mouza names repeat across West Bengal, so the JL number is what tells the office which one you mean — quote it with the P.S. or the District and Block, since it is not unique statewide.
• Sheet number, if you know it. Large mouzas are mapped across multiple sheets, and a request for the wrong sheet returns a map that doesn't contain your plot.
• A Banglarbhumi account, signed in. The Service Delivery menu shows “Please Login and then click Citizen Services” until you do.

The fee, and where to find the real number

A fee applies to a mouza map request. We deliberately do not quote an amount here — fee schedules for departmental services are revised, and a number copied from a blog is worse than no number at all.

The portal provides an Online Fees Calculator for exactly this. Use it, or read the figure the portal itself displays at the point of payment. That is the current fee; anything else is someone's memory of an older one.

Payment runs through the portal's eChallan flow — eChallan Generation produces the challan, and the payment returns a GRN you should record. If a payment succeeds but the status doesn't update, that is a separate and fairly common problem with its own fixes.

When the map simply isn't available online

Digitisation is not uniform across West Bengal. Some mouzas have clean scanned sheets; others have maps that exist only as physical cloth or paper records in the block office, sometimes in poor condition.

If Mouza Map Availability Details returns nothing for your mouza, the online route ends there. The offline route is your BL&LRO (Block Land & Land Reforms Office) for the block containing the mouza, or the DL&LRO at district level for older or archival sheets.

Go in person with the district, block, mouza name and JL number written down, and ask specifically for a certified copy of the mouza map sheet covering your dag number. Offices deal in sheet numbers, not plot numbers, so knowing which sheet your plot falls on speeds this up considerably.

A note on what a mouza map is — and isn't

A mouza map is a cadastral sheet showing plot (dag) boundaries across a revenue village. It shows relative position and shape. It is not a survey of your boundary on the ground, and it does not establish a boundary line to the precision people often assume.

For a boundary dispute, or before construction near a boundary, a map copy is supporting material — the operative document is a demarcation carried out by the department's surveyor on site. If you are downloading a map to settle an argument with a neighbour, budget for that step too.

One practical note on apps, ours included: unofficial apps such as Bhumir Tathya help with the portal's record lookups — Khatian and plot details, mutation status — and it signs in with your own banglarbhumi.gov.in account. Requesting a mouza map is not one of those. No third-party app can bypass the government's own sign-in or its fees, and any app claiming to should be deleted.
